Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2012)
Jason Segel, Ed Helms, and Susan Sarandon star in this amiable comedy from Mark and Jay Duplass. The indie filmmaking brothers direct a movie about brothers for their biggest film to date, but it still retains the signature weirdness and heart of previous work like The Puffy Chair.
The Master (2012)
Each of the three stars in this Paul Thomas Anderson film – Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams – earned an Oscar nomination for their performance. In addition to its strong acting, The Master offers some interesting insight into Scientology – and a pre-Mr. Robot Rami Malek.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Currently #23 on IMDb’s list of top 250 movies and a five-time Oscar winner, this film has new relevance after the passing of its director, Jonathan Demme. Other actors have played Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter, but it’s hard to beat Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins here.
Death at a Funeral (2007)
This British comedy (remade stateside in 2010) is a darkly comic delight, featuring an amazing performance from Alan Tudyk, alongside great work from Peter Dinklage, Matthew MacFadyen, Ewen Bremner, and Kris Marshall. Death at a Funeral highlights all the awkwardness that can ensure at the titular event, but this is probably far more fun than most have.
Gladiator (2000)
Arena action and political intrigue make this crowd-pleasing Oscar winner a modern classic that’s currently #46 on IMDb’s top 250. It’s old-school in its setting, but entirely contemporary in its effects and themes. Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Richard Harris, and Connie Nielsen star, while director Ridley Scott offers one of his best films in a career full of great work.
