Beloved Dan Brown hero, Robert Langdon, is back and he’s doing what he does best — sticking his little symbologist nose in another epic, global conspiracy. The trailer for Inferno, the latest chapter in professor Langdon’s inordinately thrilling life, is here and it looks bloodier and conspiracy theory-er than any of the films that have come before it.
Tom Hanks returns in this one as Langdon. He’s ditched the long ‘do he sported in the first two Langdon films, The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, and is running through the streets of Florence with his newest brunette sidekick, Felicity Jones. This time around, the pair will be investigating a mystery tied to Dante’s Inferno — hence the title — while trying to prevent the resurgence of the Bubonic plague.
“There’s a switch. If you throw it, half the people on Earth will die,” a calm but unmistakably villainous voice says in the trailer. “But if you don’t, in a hundred years, the human race will be extinct.” Langdon is “humanity’s final hope” against this bioterrorist with a flare for the dramatic played by Ben Foster.
Will Langdon end up throwing the switch or will he crack this historical puzzle just in time? Either way, this looks like the most action-packed Hanks movie ever — regardless of the actual narrative stakes, Inferno is going to be worth watching for that reason alone.
Inferno is directed by Ron Howard and is slated to hit theaters October 28, 2016.
