Scarlett Johansson signed on to star in Paramount and DreamWorks’ live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell over a year ago, and we’ve finally gotten our first look at the actress as Major Motoko Kusanagi. In the image, she’s all steely-eyed and brooding, staring through some kind of futuristic glass, as she presumably contemplates how much ass she’s about to kick. In the Ghost in the Shell anime/manga series, Kusanagi is a covert ops cyborg and leader of a Public Security Section 9 — an intelligence agency and anti-crime unit. If there’s anyone capable of carrying a Western adaptation of this beloved material, it’s probably going to be Johansson. The actress has emerged as a bonafide action star in recent years with roles in Marvel’s Avengers films and in Luc Besson’s Lucy. Though perhaps Ricky Ma’s robot ScarJo would have been able to play a cyborg more convincingly.
Ghost in the Shell will be directed by Snow White and the Huntsman’s Rupert Sanders. Michael Pitt and Japanese superstar Takeshi Kitano will co-star. The movie is expected to be released in April 2017.
