With all this buzz and controversy about Leo not having an Oscar, we wanted to answer two burning questions: Does it really matter? Does having an Oscar really define a good actor from an outstanding one? Our short answer: No, it doesn’t. Because Leo isn’t the only amazing actor out there who hasn’t been recognized by the Academy. Read on to find out which other Hollywood greats don’t have an Oscar but are still as successful and talented as ever.

  1. Robert Downey Jr.

Um, hello?! The highest paid actor in the world for years straight doesn’t even have an Oscar? If that’s not an indication that the Academy’s opinions shouldn’t hold as much weight as they do, then we don’t know what is!
  2. Johnny Depp

So maybe Depp’s movies in the recent years haven’t gotten as much love as they used to. But that doesn’t undermine just how talented and convincing he is in all of his roles. Depp gave us Pirates of the Carribbean, Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, Finding Neverland etc. etc. The list goes on.
  3. Will Smith

Will Smith is the gift that just keeps giving. From his charming Fresh Prince of Bel Air days to his touching performances in The Pursuit of Happyness (for which he was nominated Best Actor in 2007) and Concussion, we can’t deny that Smith will go down as one of Hollywood’s most prominent names, even if he never wins an Oscar.
  4. Tom Cruise

Yep, that’s right. Tom Cruise doesn’t have an Oscar either. We really think he should’ve won one for Magnolia, but the Academy didn’t think so. Some may call him “too mainstream” for the Oscars, but we say bullshit!
  5. Samuel L. Jackson

Suprisngly, Jackson has only been nominated once for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Pulp Fiction in 1994. After being snubbed by the Academy when they did not nominate him for his role in The Hateful Eight, he and his wife publicly stated that they were over it and have “moved on.”
  6. Gary Oldman

Gary Oldman may be one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood, and yet he doesn’t even have an Oscar. Like Jackson, he’s only been nominated once for Best Actor in 2004 for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Other than that, he’s been practically ignored by the Academy despite all his great roles – Sirius Black? Lee Harvey Oswald? Dracula?
  7. Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford has been in the game for a long time, gaining worldwide fame as Han Solo and Indiana Jones in the 70’s, and yep, you guessed it – no Oscar. Ford was nominated once in 1985 for his role in Witness, but lost to William Hurt’s Kiss of a Spider Woman. Think that stopped him from making 50x more than his co-stars made in The Force Awakens? We think not.
  8.  Joaquin Phoenix

Apparently third time’s the charm doesn’t apply to Joaquin Phoenix. Though he was nominated in 2000, 2005, and 2012, Phoenix has yet to take home any trophy. But really, he could care less. Phoenix has publicly expressed his opinions on Hollywood’s awards season as “total bullshit.”
  9.  Bill Murray

Nominated just once for his role in Lost in Translation, Bill Murray has also spoken out publicly against the Oscars, stating that it could hurt your career.

“People have this post-Oscar blowback,” he said. “They start thinking, ‘I can’t do a movie unless it’s Oscar-worthy.’ It just seems people have difficulty making the right choices after that.”

  10. Donald Sutherland

Sutherland has had one of the longest standing careers in Hollywood – 50 years and going strong! And he hasn’t just had a long career, but he’s had an amazing one. Ordinary People? M*A*S*H?  Pride and Prejudice?! Not only has he never won an Academy Award, but he’s never even been nominated!
