Hooray! The 88th Academy Awards are right around the corner, so you know what that means – Leonardo DiCaprio will finally get his Oscar! Okay, okay, that’s a hopeful maybe and what we really meant to say is that it’s the perfect time to indulge in some awesome movies (for free!). Lucky for you, we’ve put together a list of movies (most which were Oscar-nominated in the past) you can watch right now on Tubi TV to get you ready for this weekend.
- Glengarry Glen Ross
An American drama about tensions arising at a real estate office where the top salesmen compete to keep their jobs. This movie gave us some of the most iconic one-liners that we still reference today. Always Be Closing!
Why you should watch: If you haven’t seen this movie, you need to stop whatever you’re doing and go watch it right now!..And if you have, then you know you should re-watch this because it’s an absolute classic! The film brings together an all-star cast, many of whom have been Oscar favorites in the past: Al Pacino (who was actually nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this film), Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin, Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin and more!
- Over The Top
A sports-drama film about a father who tries to reconcile with his estranged son by entering a world arm wrestling championship. The film stars the one and only Sylvester Stallone, who also co-wrote the screenplay.
Why you should watch: This year, Stallone is finally nominated again for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Creed. Stallone hasn’t been up for an Oscar since Rocky in 1977. We can’t help but to be excited for him and what better way to celebrate his nomination than to watch an old school Stallone kick ass in Over the Top.
Based on the true story about the 1839 slave ship La Amistad, during which the captured tribesmen gain control of the ship but end up captured and caught in a legal battle for their freedom.
Why you should watch: This is another classic film that brings together an all-star Oscar favorite cast: Morgan Freeman, Matthew McConaughey, Djimon Hounsou, and more. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and was nominated for four Academy Awards back in 1997.
- Sucker Punch
A bare-knuckle fighter teams up with a small-time con artist involved in the underworld of backstreet boxers.
Why you should watch: This is a hardly known film which shares the same name as the 2011 Fantasy-Thriller movie, and although not nearly as popular, this film is still worth a watch. Tom Hardy does what he does best – plays a convincing bad ass who fights for a living. Hardy is another one to look out for at the Oscars this year. He’s nominated for his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Revenant, and has already created a lot of buzz as being one of the underdogs. We’re rooting for you, Tom Hardy!
- It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad, world
An ensemble cast come together for a cross-country adventure in a race for $350,000.
Why you should watch: Not only was this comedy film nominated for six Academy Awards (and won one – Best Sound Editing), but it also stars some of Hollywood’s oldest and biggest names – Spencer Tracy, Sid Caeser, Milton Berle, Mickey Rooney, and more. The film, which premiered in 1963, is the oldest Oscar nod on our list, but still unforgettable to this day. Give it a watch and it’ll be sure to bring you some good laughs!
- Gods and Monsters
A British drama that recounts the last days in the life of troubled film maker James Whale, the director of many classic cult horrors such as Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein.
Why you should watch: The film won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1998 and to this day, is still one of Ian McKellen’s most defining films. He was nominated for Best Actor for this role, while Lynn Redgrave also earned a nomination for Best Actress.
- Revolutionary Road
A passionate anti-love story about a young couple who live in the suburbs of Connecticut in the 1950’s. Their relationship takes a downward spiral when both struggle to accept the torpor of their lives and start taking it out on each other.
Why you should watch: Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet starring in a film again? Yes please! This year, both are nominated for an Oscar – DiCaprio for Best Actor for his role in The Revenant, and Winslet for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Steve Jobs. The odds are looking good for the both of them since we all know DiCaprio just really needs to win one already and Winslet has already won a Golden Globe for the same nomination earlier this year. And another reason you should watch? Revolutionary Road is a great movie in and of itself – it was nominated for two Golden Globes and three Oscars back in 2008.
That concludes our list! If you want to check out more Oscar Nods, we’ve got an entire category of movies for you to check out! Click here to check out our Oscar Nods category.
