Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and we know you’re looking for the perfect movie, so here it is: Benny & Joon, which stars Johnny Depp, Aida Quinn and Mary Stuart Masterson, is a love story about two “oddballs” who come together by chance and begin a relationship that is everything but normal. The story follows Benny (Quinn) who dedicates his life to caring for his sister, Joon (Masterson) who has a mental illness. Everything changes when Joon loses a bet in poker and Sam (Depp) ends up living with them. Sam does not have a mental illness, but he is eccentric, illiterate and “different” in his own right. Sam and Joon’s strange personalities are drawn to each other and they soon fall in love.

We love Benny & Joon because it portrays love in a different light. In fact, the title suggests that – “Benny & Joon” highlights the main characters as brother and sister. The story is not just about Joon finding love, but it’s also about unconditional love. The unconditional love that Benny shares for his sister Joon really hits home for anyone who has dealt with mental illness to any degree, but especially in their family. Throughout the movie, Joon often displays erratic, unpredictable behavior. She has outbursts and breakdowns and Benny is constantly worried about her, often putting his personal life on hold to make sure she’s okay. We really feel for Benny in this movie and fall in love with his dedication to Joon.

If you’re looking for a more traditional romance film, don’t worry, Benny & Joon still has all of the sappy lovey-dovey elements we crave for. Sam and Joon’s off-beat love for each other just makes you want to say “aww!” the whole time. Depp and Masterson do a fantastic job of turning the most simple and playful moments into the most romantic moments that Sam and Joon share. We can’t help but to gush over their odd, yet endearing relationship. We don’t want to spoil the entire movie, but let’s just say that Benny & Joon still gives us the fairytale ending we all hope for in romance movies and the message of the movie is none other than your typical True love can conquer all.
