On January 1, 2006, a new show hit the screen, and it changed the game forever. That show was not “I Love New York” (see, let me get to my point!). That show was “Flavor of Love,” starring former Public Enemy hype-man Flavor Flav.
After the conclusion of season 1 of “Flavor of Love,” we received our first spinoff (never mind that “Flavor of Love” was a spinoff of “Strange Love,” which was a spinoff of season three of “The Surreal Life).
What was born changed reality television for good. The notorious Tiffany “New York” Pollard and her even more notorious mother received their very own reality dating show.
Get a few dozen caricatures of men, throw them in a house and have them compete for a woman who call herself the “HBIC” and you’ll get compelling television. It was so simple.
Not to be lost is the talent of New York herself. Sure, she was crass. She was bossy. She was incredibly condescending. But this seemingly vile character could turn her inflection on a dime, and bring explosiveness, sensitivity and an unbelievable level of entertainment.
